Time and Patience
Cold it is and she takes so long. But if I sit here long enough the door will open and in the meantime, I look small but perfectly formed in the whispering of snow and worthy of this year’s Christmas Card. I am also very smart and have lifted my title from Leo Tolstoy’s masterpiece ‘War and Peace’ … ‘The strongest of all warriors are these two – time and patience’. My mum loves Russian literature – this has surely earned me a treat.

What a patient little dog, unlike our cat who yowls loudly if we fail to open the door within a nanosecond of his arrival. ‘Like patience on a monument’. That’s not Russian, but I also love Russian literature. ‘Anna Karenina’ is my all-time favourite.
The dog serves whereas the cat is served, Vanessa … love that quote – I did Twelfth Night for A-Level. And Anna? Oh Anna is the most Russian of stories 🙂

How beautifully those doors frame The Bean in profile. She may be small in stature, but she is obviously large in character.
You dogs have such big hearts and personalities Albert and she was quite pleased with that image which captured her best side 😉

L. Tolstoy was a great writer but his philosophy was often far away from reality. Time and patience has never won wars. Napoleon lost only because Russia fought him.
I entirely agree with you … I am rather wed to War and Peace for reasons attached mostly to my father – we read it together when I was a teenager and learning Russian at school. So it has a very personal place in my heart. I note him as a writer rather than a philosopher … he was idealistic and rather misguided in my opinion. As for Napoleon …. he was an extraordinary man whom it is hard not to admire despite being appalled by him. Greed, as is so often the case was his downfall – he should never have tried to march on Russia.
Are you aware that Napoleon wanted friendship with the Russian tsar?
Indeed … he intended to spare him (but no-one much else) as I understand it. Megolamania is an interesting condition.
Great idea, great setting, great moment, great tale of scale. One thing about dogs is that they just ARE. I wish we human being were like that; put an end to our ‘cleverness’ for sure and make life on the planet more agreeable. When I want something I’m just going to sit and wait…

Yes, it is – it’s the old school and downstairs is still l’Ecole Maternelle … I would love to buy it but the village will never sell since pretty much all of them have memories tied up in the building. Now joining you in the Carolling ‘Tralalalalalalalalaaaaaa’ 😉
Ooooh! Lucky, lucky you! Who knows, one day they may need the money… the state has reduced subsidies for town councils again this year, so they may end up having to sell property. And if the size of classes changes, the school either loses classes (although smaller classes are good for children they are considered expensive) or has to add them, which can mean either closing the school or moving into bigger premises. Never say never. in the mean time I bet you have fun listening to the children in the playground – my old house was right next door to the primary school, and they used my back gate as a “safe” place for their games. Sometimes they slammed into it with so much force that it flew open and they ended up with a surprise viewing of MM putting her checks on the line to dry 🙂
I absolutely adore living above the school … we have fourteen 2-6 year olds this year and they are ultra-cute. They also love The Bean although she is entirely not to be trusted with anything under 5′ tall! I think the Maire’s overall plan is to build a school for all the children (2-12) so he may yet sell. But at the moment he has plans to turn it into an art gallery (!) on the ground floor and continue to rent the two appartments upstairs. Perhaps I can be an exhibit 😉

How lovely you are! So sweet of you to think of me and more so to take the time to tell me. From my perspective, I have no life if I can’t shine a little light as I go – the angst of the Russian soul is all very well but in the end I want love and laughter in my life more than anything and to share it with those I value. Enjoy a weekend filled with peace, love and laughter 🙂

Either the doors are very very tall (beautiful they are) or Bean is really small , I had not realized how small she is , and never would guess it by all the kilometres she walks with you 🙂

She is about 7 lbs in weight but her heart is immense …. the doors are pretty massive though to be fair!
7 pounds ? she must be the size of the head of two of my rescued ones 🙂 She surely is a dear , and yes I believe her heart is immense 🙂 as they can be .
