I took the picture through a wire screen because I had no choice not because I was being clever or in anyway creative but I do like the effect and since this weeks Photo Challenge is called Grid it fits and I thought I might share it. The challenge for you is to guess where it is … the clue is in the title.
PS: Unlike my local gothic cathedral this one is black with centuries of filth rather than being built of raven basalt. So the clean up that is currently and visibly in progress is revealing the honeyed blonde of her youth and doubtless she feels all the zestier for it though whether a place of worship is allowed to have more fun, I rather doubt.

It was a really cool place too … not the Cathedral (I personally get quite freaked out by Religious architecture and imagary) but the City was totally unexpected 🙂 Thanks for the complement btw

I also thought Köln but I didn’t expect it to be so dirty. I thought they had rebuilt it after the war so was expecting to see a bit more pristine. We are going to be in Köln next weekend so I will go see for myself…(Suzanne)
It took 14 bombs in the war but though very damaged it remained largely intact. The repairs are in some sense ongoing and the dirt is generally original!

religious architecture_ dramatic, awe inspiring, evocative, overwhelming
eversoslightly creepy- I had an odd and lasting reaction to Liverpool Cathedral- the overweening effect it had on me, close up, made me give up the place I was offered at Liverpool Art School many moons ago
I remember there was always a bottle on my parent’s dressing table …. iconic indeed. As for religious architecture, I get the wrong sort of shivers very easily. My daughter is at Liverpool reading Fine Arts and had a view over the CofE Cathedral from her rooms last year. If you want to dull the effect just remember Paddy’s Wigwam (the Catholic Cathedral) 🙂
I don’t know what it is about the CofE Cathedral- my daughter did her B.A in English & Education at Liverpool Hope and had graduation service in that damn cathedral!
I coped, she’s my daughter and my pride was stronger than the revulsion I have for the place. Inexplicable.
I can only think it’s partly due to certain buildings’ position within the landscape. Something surfacing frm the collective unconscious? but that couldn’t apply to the more recent structure could it?
I have a simpler less aesthetic explanation. I think it is to do with being sensitive to the number of souls lost building the damn things. And some (Liverpool is a fine example) are built of austere materials which exagerate their presence in the wrong way. I’m sorry you had to sit in it …. I think I have that ‘pleasure’ to come in two years and daughter who is here with me to celebrate my birthday today says they have to process through Liverpool TO the Cathedral in their robes … barking bonkers given the amount of rain in the city!!

PS Chartres has exactly same effect on me
Now oddly Chartres is one I can cope with but Clermont Ferrand looks positively demonic to me ….

I love how sometimes what seems like a problem (the wire fence) ends up creating something even more interesting!

beautiful cathedral….and love the picture with the wire, gives it another layer of interest….
It’s quite a stunner …. the city was terribly bombed in the war but the cathedral remained largely intact (though it took 14 direct hits) – the wire seems to enhance the complex stonework somehow … happy accident!
