I’m an instant star … just add water

I often take part in the wordpress weekly photo challenge but sometimes I just don’t feel moved.  Claudette whose lovely blog is titled ‘To Search and To Find’ with the strapline ‘happiness in every day’ writes beautiful words and takes wonderful photographs and decided to invent something called Emotography and post an example every week.  I commented that it is a delightful idea (whilst also commenting on the beauty and pathos of the first example titled ‘Forlorn’) and she said that she would like other’s to get involved.  So I am and I hope you will too.  Just post a picture and write about the emotion it conjures in you and link it to Claudette’s site.   I’m certain that many of you who I interact with would enjoy this, get value and give value by participating.  There are no rules, you don’t have to commit to every week, just when the mood takes you, share.  It feels rather good to me.

So to mine … this is a picture taken the day after my daughter’s wedding last August when she and her friends were having a recovery party and my husband and I opted out and went instead to Stourhead just down the road from the venue for a recuperative walk.  Stourhead was one of my father’s favourite places – he loved the trees, loved trees in general (I wrote about his love once before, just here) and he was amused by the temples which you can see one of across the water.    For me, I just love the water and the reflection and the clouds, those very English clouds and the whole thing evokes nostalgia for England, for summer and mostly for my dad who loved the place – so I give you my first Emotograph ‘Nostalgia’ …

PS:  In the week of David Bowies untimely passing, I’ve pinched his words for my title.  When speaking of stardom he said ‘I’m an instant star – just add water and stir’.  Let loose from his last illness I hope he’s kicking some stardust in Heaven.  With my dad.

  1. Thank you for your very kind words of support Osyth.
This photo, with the shore of green in the distance, makes me think of quieter, more genteel times. Trees are beautiful aren’t they, so much life just quietly growing, firm in the earth.
    Thanks for joining in.

    • It’s a pleasure .. I will join again soon, I am sure. I had my dad on my mind today so this was an obvious choice for a starter but there will be other emotions expressed over time I am sure. It’s a great idea!

      • Hugs for your Dad thoughts. My Dad died when I was 17, my Husband when I was 38, so I am familiar with the kind of thoughts those things trigger.

      • I’m so sorry – that is twice far too young. No wonder you have such a sensitive spirit … thank you for channelling it so beautifully for us to share 🙂

  2. Beautiful picture Fiona. I too love the way that water simply reflects and you get a double image. It always reminds me of the Thames Television Logo!!

This picture, framed hanging on a wall, simply captioned ” Nostalgia ” has the power to evoke that emotion in anyone that has a a long past memory of woods and a lake or pond.. I imagine the perfect reflection of the sky would have a lot to do with that.. Great picture and I get my own nostalgia from a lake I and my then fiancée, would frequent.. We loved the mirror image and would toss pepples in to ripple the sky..

    • I love water and when it reflects the sky and the land around it is doubly beautiful. I’m glad the emotion I felt resonates with you too. That’s a lovely image of you and your then love rippling the sky together 🙂

  6. Emotive indeed. Both the photograph (painterly!) and the sentiments (stardust!). I may just be inspired to join. Cheers, my dear! xo

    • Oh I do hope you do! It’s such a great and simple idea making one actually consider the emotion that prompted the photograph or that the photograph in turn prompts. And of course I am delighted that you liked my picture and sentiment xx

  8. Love this Osyth. I’m hooked and will contribute in due course. My father is very much in my thoughts at the moment. Thank you as always for enriching the day 🙂

    • I’m so glad you liked it. And I’m very very pleased that you will contribute to Claudette’s event. It’s such a wonderful idea, making one stop and ponder the emotions that we felt that compelled us to take a picture or conversely the emotions that we feel when we look back at something. The circle of life is unbroken when we keep our lost one’s in our thoughts and sometimes circumstances bring them out of the shadows that they occupy constantly in our minds to the front. I read a really interesting article about the value of ‘talking’ to our lost parents and significant elders the other day. It absolutely resonated because I talk to mine and my maternal granny regularly and more so when I have any sort of challenge to face in life …. I do hope you are recouperating well and that all sunny in your world 🙂

      • Thanks so much Osyth. Making slow but steady progress. Back to the studio soon I hope 🙂

  9. I can see the STARDUST cloud from here. SOMETHINGS MOVIN’ AND SHAKIN’ UP THERE… My focus kept going back to these 7 words you wrote.
“Get value and give value by participating.” My value of Hope has grown and shines brighter today, due to your participation yesterday in what I value in life. THANK YOU – JANE

    January 17, 2016
    • And thank you Jane. I have found some stardust in finding you …. 🙂

  14. an emotional post that has touched my heart… <3 maman would be still alive IF she hadn't smoked…

RIP, Dave… another Genius has taken off from "ground control" to other galaxy… Serge Gainsbourg used to sing:"Dieu est un fumeur de havanes et de gitanes… la fumée envoie au paradis…"

    January 20, 2016
  15. That is such a beautiful post and photograph, The reflections on the water have an other worldly feel to them. RIP your Dad and David. My maman et papa may also have been alive if they hadn’t smoked but who knows?

    January 21, 2016
    • Thank you Kerry! We can wish that our loved one’s were still here but I guess the fact is that they aren’t and all we can do is sieze our own days with love and laughter and kindness and try to be the best we can and not beat ourselves up when we aren’t quite perfect (not something I suffer from often, you understand 😉 )

      January 21, 2016
      • You are so right. After all I nearly went to heaven (or somewhere) under the wheels of an 18 wheeler yesterday. 🙂

        January 21, 2016
      • And I’m bluddy glad you didn’t!!

        January 21, 2016
  16. What a beautiful post and that photo is amazing

      January 22, 2016
      • Well hey, it works! 😉

        January 22, 2016
  17. Dear Osyth,
I can be such an unfocused, insensitive ass. I did not pick up on your feelings regarding the death of your father. I am profoundly SORRY. What is so odd about not picking up on your feeling, is that I can’t to this day talk about my father’s death and actually fullfilling all of his wishes so that he could die in comfort and with dignity, without reliving each feeling as if he had just died now. I am really sorry. We all deserve that intuitive feeling from others, and you deserve a more aware, a more sensitive and mindful radical from the U.S. :-))

  18. A recovery party? Your daughter is going to be a wonderful wife. Glad you found water to add that morning. Who did the stirring?

    February 9, 2016
    • She’s a smart girl – the stirring is always down to me 😉

  19. I loved this old post, Fi! 💖
I also picture David Bowie joining the wild, fun loving band up in the heavens! ☁️ 🌠☁️ I’m sure your Dad loves all the oldies but goodies (musicians). 🤗

    June 6, 2018
    • How lovely that you found it and enjoyed it! That year we lost so many of the greats of music …. I’m pretty sure they are having a blast and my dad will be dancing along happily for sure! 🤗

      June 6, 2018
      • Ahh, the great band in the sky is full of love and rocking with the stars. My Dad loved the Eagles, Beatles, Rolling Stones and especially Elton John.
Almost all of those guys are here on Earth still, except Glen Frey and John Lennon.
Many legendary musicians are in the heavenly “choir” of their own making.

        June 7, 2018
      • And George Harrison … I had such a crush on him when I was a teen – he was so ethereal and pretty!!! The heavens gain is our loss down here 😔

        June 8, 2018
      • Yes, how did I forget George? Gone far too soon. . .
So sorry, good to keep all the band members remembered. . . so many others. Thank you, Fiona.

  20. And I’m delighted to have ‘made the introduction’ …. it’s one of the real pleasures of this blogging game!
