  2. It’s amazing what lies the internet can tell, and how brazenly some use it to dupe. That look speaks volumes!

    • The quite extraordinary thing about this particular fellow was that he was not just brazen but visibly offended that others were unhappy with his duping! The picture of me never fails to bringing it all flooding back in lurid technicolour!!

  3. Oh dear, what a lesson we’re learning from you already Osyth, the power of the picture that lures us in … I feel as though we’re in store for many more lessons. A fun and entertaining read, though you clearly don’t look too amused in that photo. Look forward to the next instalment. 🙂

    • I was extremely unamused at that moment. Fortunately the thing with this place is that through it all we simply KNOW that it will be beautiful. And as Gill commented yesterday – it is a pretty house …. just rather an abused girl that needs a vast amount of tlc to coax her back to her smiling best.

      • And why do I have a strong feeling that you’re going to do just that.

      • 😉

  4. Expectations …expectations….totally different when you see it…i can totally relate on that note…i have been fooled many times by the pictures in the internet when buying something…good thing buying a pre owned property or house is not that popular here….from where i am, we’d rather build a new house than buy and renovate an old house..

Looking forward to the next installment Osyth..

    • My husband has built two houses in his lifetime so you can imagine what a baptism of fire this all is for him!!

  5. I was buying in the pre internet era….usually from yellow sheets of paper with black outlines which were supposed to represent the properties….but even they could flatter to deceive.

    December 13, 2017
    • We bought this place sans imobiliser (stet) but sur l’internet and the deception was remarkable. That said, we had seen the property in all its tawdry dispair before we bought it so it would be wrong of me to say we were deceived into buying. I imagine those bits of paper were entirely unrelated to what you were buying! We shelved our search for the maison principale in 2015 but we will in less than 2 years be hunting again. You will understand that I have cultivated two imobilisers (see how I LOVE this word) and will stick to them like glue. I can’t honestly stand the thought of another baddie!

      December 13, 2017
      • They were interesting…to say the least!
And then you had to find them….a bit like ‘we are here’, immobiliser places finger on map,’the enemy are there’, wild flourish with hand.
Not to speak of having to approach them from the right side…something which boggles the logical mind but which reveals itself in practice. I spent hours looking for the first house I eventually bought before being shown how to approach it from the right side…

      • I would listen to your remeniscences for days on end … a different world – did we progress? I know the answer

Oh, the look on your face says it all. Exteriors never tell the true story….in people or buildings.

    • The utterly bizarre thing, with hindsight, is that we knew what the truth within was (in part) and yet we still went ahead. It was a compulsion and is an explanation as to why we feel we must see the project through to glory come hell or the highest waters.

  7. You looked disgusted 😉 I hope you can turn the house into what you expected it to be

    December 13, 2017
    • Thank you, dear friend! We will – I just have to be patient …. which is not usual for me but surely is a good lesson!

OMG! That look carries an entire encyclopedia of disgust, disdain and many other descriptors I will not emblazon your post with! I’m still laughing as I type the last words!

    December 14, 2017
    • Not the face that launched a thousand ships more the face that wore a thousand expressions none of which were flattering either to it or to the house!

  9. I feel badly this all happened but you may call this a great pay forward effort by telling us your “cautionary tale!” I appreciate this a lot as some people sugar coat their strifes. While actually struggle unites us, (you and I), in so many hidden ways that bubble and surface each time I read your posts, Fiona. ❤ 😙
Big hugs! Best of wishes for your maison and where you stay with big columns in the meantime. . .

    December 18, 2017
    • I prefer to laugh but yes it is a sugar coating. It helps get through. If we didn’t do that I think we really would be permanently despairing and that’s no way to live a life. I still hope that one day you and I will sit and share coffee and cake or wine and bread or some such because I know we have so much in common xo

  10. Despite the inherent lies of the previous owner and the depravity of his soul, I have been blessed with an image of your disdain that I can tinge with sepia and stridently utilize as the centerpiece of a morality tale involving dissatisfaction and waywardness. (Working title: “Waiting to Impale”.) For this alone your haphazard journey has reaped riches that I cannot hope to adequately capture with my tiny, random words, but I shall strive regardless…

    • Ha! The silver lining is retrieved … this I will be breathless to read when it bubbles to the surface of your glistening pool of wordy wonder!

    • Keep doing what you do, being who you are and that girl will be in your life and no looking back before you know it. I know this. I have special powers 😉 And any guy who can tie a decent pony tail for his granny as well as write such beautiful words straight from a lovely heart is a catch for the perfect match ❤️
