People

A couple of years ago I had the great privilige of being in a box at The Albert Hall at 11 a.m the packed house made up entirely of colleagues from my then corporate job.  The lights dimmed and a voice in the darkness uttered dramatically: ‘Ladies and Gentlemen …. Cirque du Soleil’  This is entirely irrelevant except to say that wonderful build up to introduce a feast of brilliance feels appropriate here.  Because I want you to anticipate the people you are going to meet and I would love you to feel you get to know them as I try to draw them with my words.  Some are people from my past, some I knew before I arrived here to live and others I have met along the way.  Some are leading roles, others supporting cast but all are fabulous and the stories hinge on them.  So let le rideau se leve and lets get on with the fun.  The fun that could only take place in this beautiful forgotten place.  The place that I hope you will love as I do.  The place that has enticed me, finally to put down roots.

Just one thing – amongst this cast is only one clown, only one jester and that is me.  I am the only one I laugh at but the really beautiful thing is that as much as I am the stranger, as much as I struggle with the language and as much as it is me learning the customs and traditions, I never ever feel that those around me are laughing at me.  Despite the fact that I am an almost 6 foot Englishwoman who for the first 6 weeks here insisted on introducing herself ‘je suis anglais’ – which translates as I am an Englishman ….

  2. In Shakespeare, the Jester, the King’s Fool, is the wisest of all. I look forward to meeting your cast of interesting characters.

Hahahaha that last sentence, absolutely priceless.. Madame your tales are so well crafted, just sucking us in, leaving us wanting more.. First read was Beasties ( was too intriguing of a title to resist ) and its a cliffhanger !!! I was looking on the page to see where it continued.. I guess patience will have to become a virtue of mine.. lol

    • The pages on the top bar are just tasters … For recent posts you can check the slider or the side bar which has everything filed by month and year. Actually I need to kick myself in the pants as I haven’t posted for a few weeks …. A little too much life getting in the way 😉

  5. THIS IS YOUR STORY AND IT IS A GREAT STORY. PEOPLE SEE THEMSELVES IN YOUR WORDS. WHAT’S THE PROBLEM?

    • Sorry I’ve been a bit absent this week … I get moments of hermitude when I need to duck down and consider. I’m glad you like this story. People only need to take themself less seriously and others more seriously to make it work, I feel. I’ll be back in the saddle later today having given myself a stern talking too …. I always listen to me – NOT!

      • Speak kindly of yourself and listen.

    • Hey Gloria! I’m delighted to find you amongst my raggle taggle fold. I will take some time out in the days coming to read your blog and chances are I will follow back – the swiftest glance revealed a recipe for puff pastry – this has confounded me forEVER so you may have me just there 🙂

  7. This post reminded me of the recent surprise encounter you had with Cameron in England. You live in France, Cameron in England and I live in the United States.I love the way wordpress keeps all of us in close “proximity” through words and emotions.

    • The world is a smaller and more supportive place via WordPress, certainly. Although I generally live in France, I am living in Massachusetts for most of this year and it happens that my mother lives about a mile from Cameron. Small world indeed. Emotional support, practical advice, a community even some feeling of family is the upside of Social Media. I’ve delighted that you are a part of that.

  10. Quite interesting!! Hey, this post stirs up memories, though it’s not really relevant but as I read Cirque du Soleil, I went back in my college days as we did a presentation on this topic

    • They are unbelievable! And were wholly irrelevant to the post in reality 😁😁

  11. ‘je suis anglais’. That is priceless! I am doubling up with laughter. Could you please lend me inches? I am feeling dwarfed at 5’ 4.5”.

    • Oh but you can dazzle in heels without looking like a drag queen …. I envy you xx

      • Long legs never hurt nobody. Do you know Elizabeth Debicki? I have quite a girl crush on her and she wears heels. Towering over the world and looking down upon it a bit. Sigh. Some pleasures I shall never know. How does it look from up there?

        April 4, 2017
      • I know I’m lucky and yes, I do know Elizath Debicki … I wish I was THAT gorgeous! Of course there is nothing wrong with wearing heels if you are tall (unless you suffer with vertigo of course) … I love them and the view is quite pleasing. I went to a party once when I was a rower and my coach (a psychiatrist) roared ‘F’ing Hell Osyth, what’s a girl like you doing wearing heels?’ to which I retorted ‘intimidating you, quite clearly, Pete’ … it has it’s upsides!

        April 4, 2017
      • AHAHAHA. That was precious! I am imagining the scene in my head. You were a rower too? You have some toned muscles then lady! I am impressed. Cheers to that view of the world. I am looking up from mine and sighing vigorously. I shall tuck my tail and go for a run to streamline the short legs I am ‘blessed’ with. Catch you soon! xx

      • Keep running lovely. Very important to stay in shape – inside and outside. I was a rower, I still do a bit but nothing special. I keep looking at the rivers here and sizing them up for feasibility. They do row and I’m contemplating loudly. It’s a thing. I love it .. in the meantime, we sit in the gym on the wretched Concept 2 and we hike and very soon we will be able to run again because the snow in the hills will be melted (not keen on street running. Far too self-conscious so a big shout out and Chapeau to you if that’s what you do and even if it isn’t!) xx

        April 4, 2017
      • I am not saying no to a chapeau 🙂 I have to run a few streets to get to the park which is massive and beautiful. It is spread over acres and acres of green where once executions used to take place. Irony abounds in life and curious how the passage of time has transformed it into a peaceful place. Well safe rowing till you get on the river. It will be more fun, you know. Snow on the hills sounds divine. Dreamy xx
