Won’t you join the dance?

Out walking on Saturday after a fresh tumble of damp sticky snow, we came across this ravishing creature.  It has the look  of a crustacean feeling its way across the sand and brought to mind instantly the creations of Dutch artist Theo Jansen  who creates fantastical kinetic sculptures which echo the most outlandish elements of beast, bird and bug.   Life imitating art as the photo challenge requests this week …

PS:  As for me, I was in Wonderland with  Alice, listening intently and trying not to put a foot in the soup as the Mock Turtle tells the story of the beauteous Lobster Quadrille.  But try as I did, I couldn’t find a partner for this shrimp – perhaps I should join the dance – after all, it is what gave me the title.

  1. Wow! What a beautiful frozen landscape – sometimes I miss snow but I was running in shorts yesterday… 🙂

    • I was walking in gaitors – challenging to look glamorous in gaitors!!

      February 12, 2016
      • I think you could pull it off. 😉

        February 12, 2016
  2. Frozen Beauty! Thanks Osyth for sharing this wonderful photo. 🙂

    February 12, 2016
    • It’s my pleasure … it seemed too good an opportunity to miss given the title of the challenge. Theo Jansen is worth a google (or follow my link) if you are feeling like some extraordinary distraction from the C word 😉

      February 12, 2016
      • Thanks, understood! 🙂

        February 12, 2016
  3. It looks like the great albino lobster!

    February 12, 2016
    • Perfectly put! 🙂

  4. What fun to come across this snow creature! I love winter and finding all sorts of beauty in it.

    • Me too! I love the way frost and snow change the landscape … we actually managed to get lost in the woods that day because everything was so different – like Narnia 🙂

      February 12, 2016
  5. Fabulous photo. I’d be happy to exchange your snow for our miserable rain.

    February 12, 2016
    • Rain can be so wonderful but when it just keeps on coming as I know it has been in France and England it is nothing short of depressing. Mind you – the forecast is for -23 with a windchill of another -11 tomorrow so I might be laughing on the other side of my frozen face!!

      February 12, 2016
  6. Gorgeous – it does resemble a giant squid reaching its frosty tentacles out, but frozen in time by the kiss of the Snow Queen…..

    February 12, 2016
    • Oooh – THAT is a fabulous description! xx

      February 12, 2016
  7. Winter creates beautiful landscapes. I love looking at the pictures 🙂

    February 12, 2016
    • I’m definitely a V girl – Valley or Vivaldi it’s Four Seasons for me and Winter when she graces us with her frost and snow is pretty unbeatable.

      February 12, 2016
      • Aesthetically winter is dramatic but I have problem with cold temperatures and I can’t look at snow and ice without a shiver and giving praise to something or other that I’m not out in it.

        February 12, 2016
      • After walking the dog at lunchtime my face agrees with you – and we are set to drop to -23 tomorrow so I may be less than enamoured at that point 🙂

        February 12, 2016
      • Bloody hell! It hasn’t gone below 15°C here all winter. I know that’s exceptional but…

        February 12, 2016
      • I think it’s just the good old US of A proving that it can 😉

        February 13, 2016
  8. Lovely, crisp and white. Imagination is such a vital part of humanity, I see a dragons wing. Thanks for sharing this lovely photo.

    February 12, 2016
    • Oh I love that!

      February 13, 2016
  9. Gorgeous picture! I really like your interpretation… I don’t think I’ll ever walk in the snowy woods with the same eyes again, and I’m glad! Thank you, and stay warm this weekend. We’re used to cold winters in New England, but even this is ridiculous for us!

    February 12, 2016
    • Thank you …. I think I just like anthropomorphasising 🙂 I will try and keep warm but goodness, my face wouldn’t MOVE after walking The Bean at lunchtime today. Stay cozy yourself 🙂

      February 13, 2016
      • Anthropomorphising! Haven’t heard that term since my English major days. Love it and the fact that you practice it, hopefully on a regular basis. 😘

        February 13, 2016
      • Very definitely …. and it is a fine word 🙂

I suddenly have this craving for crab legs.. hmmmm wonder why ?
Great pic !!! Ice is my favorite winter scenery.. The trees glisten with the glassy coating.. Except for the damage it can cause, it’s a beautiful part of winter..
I wish I could have snapped a few pics while driving, but I couldn’t.. Northern Indiana was getting snow showers from lake effect and the wind was kicking up causing numerous snow devils.. They only lasted mere seconds but fun to watch the miniature snownados 😄

    February 12, 2016
    • That would be a mighty hunk of seafood! Thankyou – ice and snow really do change the landscape in a magical way – I have some wonderful pictures of a drive home in France (right after we signed for the house in Marcoles actually …. more of that next week) – I was driving and Two Brains took the pictures. I like the word snownado …. it’s a keeper 🙂

      February 13, 2016
  11. Thank you for the heads up with the Dutch artist. Fascinating work! Enjoy the weekend.

    February 13, 2016
    • I discovered him only recently as he has an exhibition not far from here. I hope your weekend is relaxing and happy 🙂

      February 13, 2016
      • Thank you so much. It is going well. <3

        February 13, 2016
  12. Oh my gosh! Breathtaking! The photo and the lyrical piece of text. Sigh …..

    February 13, 2016
    • Those moments when nature just threw caution to the wind and gave us so much joy in an hour’s walk – and the opportunity to reference both Theo Jansen who I have recently discovered and Alice was too good to miss 🙂

      February 13, 2016
  13. Beautiful shrimp. Real ‘found art’! I have loved Theo Jansen’s work since seeing the sand creature thing a few years back on a documentary

    February 13, 2016
    • Theo Jansen is a very recent find for me – he has an exhibition close to here and it’s fair to say I am blown away. Our shrimp was fleeting but magnificent 🙂

      February 13, 2016
  14. Your imagination and lyrical ability is quite superb Fiona.

    February 13, 2016
  15. Great title for a great photo.

      February 13, 2016
  16. Thank you for taking me to the heart of this magical moment with gorgeous fotos and evocative words.. ‘a fresh tumble of damp sticky snow,’ Awesome! Have pinned to my Pinterest so others can enjoy. Have a great weekend.

    February 13, 2016
    • Gosh! I’m really flattered that you thought it good enough to Pin. Thank you 🙂

      February 14, 2016
  17. Wonderland indeed, although I’m happy the snow is there and not here. Thanks for the introduction to Theo Jansen. I just enjoyed visiting his site. Happy Valentine’s Day 🙂

    February 14, 2016
    • I actually did have a VERY happy Valentine’s day. And the snow is definitely here all of a sudden and the arctic temperatures – I thought I knew what cold is! Theo Jansen is a recent discovery for me too but he is really interesting and the exhibit he had at Peabody Essex was amazing – great to see all ages so engaged with art as there were several school aged and younger children the day we visited 🙂

      February 15, 2016
  18. your fairy post and its title have reminded me of an American friend’s encouragement for my b’day:”as long as you keep on dancing, you’ll never grow old…” 🙂 I guess she’s been right! 😉

    February 15, 2016
    • I’ll drink to that and to you 🙂

      February 15, 2016
  19. First great quotes in the previous post….really hit home….and the pictures of the snow….so incredibly cold beauty….love it….I can smell the crisp clean air…..kat

    February 15, 2016
    • I’m becoming obsessed with different kinds of snow here – we’ve had wet sticky snow (in that picture) light fluffy snow, snow so fine it’s like a sandstorm and the joyous delights (NOT) of ice rain since I’ve been here. The stuff falling out of the sky right now looks suspiciously like the latter LOL!!

      February 15, 2016
      • Ice rain is the worse, I love the big fluffy flakes that stick to your eye lashes….LOL however its all beautiful in it own cold sort of way….k

        February 15, 2016
      • I never thought I would have to wear something called yaktraks to walk down the road … but my sore behind shouted loud and I gave in!

        February 15, 2016
      • Yaktraks sounds very vogue…..LOL

        February 15, 2016
      • With those and my snappy gaitors I’m a sex goddess 😀

        February 15, 2016
      • I hope you have your hair in a long flow…..lol bowing briskly over your shoulders…..

        February 16, 2016
  20. That is so beautiful mesmerizing Fiona!

    February 15, 2016
    • Thank you dear lady! It’s pretty easy when Lady Nature is being so generous 🙂

      February 15, 2016
      • oh yes I agree nature is generous for sure!

        February 15, 2016

What an amazing photograph and wonderful words. Love both.

    February 16, 2016
    • Thank you …. Sometimes it just falls into the lap 🙂

      February 16, 2016
  22. I like your seeing a lobster or crustacean in the snow. I study clouds as they float along in the sky, Osyth. I forget, did you see my Disney parade post with a Dumbo cloud?
I tend to see the lacy look of a veil or white oleander flowers hanging down from an arch. It could be perfect for a wedding background. ♡

    February 22, 2016
    • I did see the Dumbo cloud. It brought to mind that wonderful scene in Truly Madly Deeply when they are lying looking out of the window spotting things in the clouds … such a beautiful film. I love clouds, I love nature really – I love what you see and what you see beyond what you see 🙂
