What is all this sweet work worth …

I’m sure I should be quoting Thoreau since this picture was snaffled on Cape Cod last Autumn. You can indeed stand there ‘and put all America behind you’. And it would be highly appropriate. Thoreau spoke much sense that resonates today. If you let it.

Instead though, I am going to tie this to one of my favourite poems. One I learned to heart so I could whisper it secretly under the sheets after lights-out when I was a just-teen and captivated by the idea of love.

I defy you not to be enchanted by it ..

The fountains mingle with the river

and the rivers with the ocean,

The winds of heaven mix for ever

With a sweet emotion;

Nothing in the world is single

All things by a law divine

In one spirit meet and mingle,

Why not I with thine? –

See the mountains kiss high heaven

And the waves clasp one another;

No sister-flower would be forgiven

if it disdained it’s brother;

And the sunlight clasps the earth

And the moonbeams kiss the sea;

What is all this sweet work worth

If thou kiss not me?

Percy Bysshe Shelley

PS: Those that kindly and patiently follow me, may relax knowing that I have settled in my new temporary nest and that finally, after some epic shenanagins with local internet providers, I am back in my saddle and ready to hit you with more half-baked drivel. I can actually feel the crackling excitement in the wings. In the meantime, I present this to the scrumptuous gallery of offerings for the weekly photo challenge this week asking for
‘Textures’ …

And also: Since I have been away for so long, I think you honestly
have
earned a bonus – the other thing the picture spoke insistently to me of … see what you think:

  1. While I admire Thoreau, as a sensible New Englander, he did not venture into the realm of ecstasy and emotion that Shelley often visited. Love this poem. I may appropriate it in future posts of my own.

    August 2, 2017
    • He was indeed sensible and I will defend some of his sense at applicable today but he certainly can’t touch Shelley in my humble opinion Actually few can. I’m so glad you enjoyed revisiting Love’s Philosphy and hope you will, indeed appropriate it, Tom!

  2. Wonderful poem Osyth!!!

    August 2, 2017
    • Isn’t it? It hasn’t left me for too many years to mention and it still defines love, what it really and truly is, to me! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment – I really appreciate it! 🙂

      August 2, 2017
  3. A bit of Shelley does the soul good on a dull day when the sky cannot make up its mind -to burst fully or hold back and leak annoyingly. In turn making me wonder about whether I should hold back on the run or not. How I digress! (You can swat me for that).

Back to Mr. S. ‘See the mountains kiss high heaven/And the waves clasp one another;’ such heartwarming imagery.

That golden brown, texture like sun, does it for me. Now every time I hear Cape Cod, the mind shall conjure up this vision in gold. Am quite ready for the sizzle of the drivel! xx

    • Oh Dippy! Or should I say Dotty? You are such a pleasure to interact with being a kindred grasper and clasper of beautiful verse. It is a gorgeous poem. Truly one of my favouirtes but I was torn by the idea of going The Stranglers route with the picture … do get to The Cape some time (but not until the end of September at earliest) … it really is wonderful and you can gawp at the Kennedy compound (if you remember the address … I left it on the table) and go to the magical Kingston and laugh at the British town names (Truro is just outside Kingston for example). I honestly think you would love it. Kingston is a Gay haven by the way and The Bean and I had a blast (maybe Two Brains a bit less!!!! 😉 ) xx

      August 2, 2017
      • You can call me either of those, Donkey or Dodo. I will take anything. I also go by the name Arundhati.

Grasper and clasper. How I love your way with words. I do know something special this way comes when I see your name pop up.

The recommendations sound intriguing. A Truro beyond the Truro I know, you say. Why I got to lay eyes on it! At this point I have to ask, is your husband quite thin and tall? 🙂

        August 3, 2017
      • Your name is lovely as are your kind words. My husband is indeed talk and thin … should I be scared? Xx

        August 3, 2017
      • Thank ye, o lovely lady!

The Bean? Ain’t that a dead giveaway 😛 xx

        August 3, 2017
      • Haha! The Bean is my dog 😂😂😂😂 and she is short and shiny and we can’t remember why she was called The Bean (except possibly my obsession with the baked variety). Hubby is k own as HB2 (The husband with two brains ( but he is built like a runner Bean ) 😁xx

        August 3, 2017
      • I do remember the two brains bit! How could I forget The Bean? Pardon me for my faux pas. If I do not make a couple a day, I feel not all right in the head. xx

        August 3, 2017
      • Kindred sister! The Bean is not remotely offended… far more intent on staring me down for a piece of cheese and bread action! Xx

        August 3, 2017
      • Hahaha The Bean deserves a hug and a cheese & bread apology on my behalf! 😉 Have a wonderful day dearest! xx

  4. No talky to me ’bout BL***Y internet providers unless you want to share an off line rantfest. They have reduced me to extreme stress this week and nearly caused irreparable damage to my relationship as I tasked Trev with sorting the sodding gits out

    August 2, 2017
    • I have WiFi and telephone and I will email you on the morrow. Mine was a sorry saga and I am claiming compensation. Fat chance!!

      August 2, 2017
      • That bad? Lordy maybe I should claim too.

        August 2, 2017
      • I’ll explain tomorrow but yes. That bad! I expect they’ll just shrug but I’m pretty persistent when riled 😆

        August 2, 2017
  5. Sorry, had to let that out. Shelley had such an interesting middle name, bit like you m’dear

    August 2, 2017
    • I’ve never ever worked out how to pronounce his. Which I suppose on reflection is the same as mine for others. Presumably Bysshe tripped off the tongue Chez Shelley!!

      August 2, 2017
      • Me neither. I will laugh if the way I pronounce your moniker proves to be way out

        August 2, 2017
      • Haha …. I’ll test you! 😅

        August 2, 2017
  6. Welcome back. Lovely image and poem.

    August 2, 2017
    • Thank you – it’s a bit on the run but I have SO much to catch up on having been prisoner of French no-internet providers for a week and prisoner of my mother in Oxfordshire for 2 weeks before that 😉

      August 2, 2017
      • In my life, I wouldn’t be sure quite what was worse! Breathe, breathe … and drink coffee 🙂

        August 2, 2017

    • Thank you Bernadette … you are far too kind 🙂

      August 2, 2017
  8. such a beautiful poem – and I love that you memorized – and can imagine you whispering it under your sheets after lights out as a teen! 🙂

    August 2, 2017
    • I was awfully gauche throughout my teens so poetry and songs and literature were my imaginary forrays into the delicous sounding world of love! I think Shelley’s poem ranks as one of the best ever but I am probably biased by my teen-self! 🙂

      August 2, 2017
  9. Thank you for Shelley – reminder of my youth, when I first read his poetry in English and was overcome and overwhelmed by a wave of emotions.
I was not familiar with The Stranglers, so thank you for the musical interlude as well.
Welcome back to the murky waves of blogosphere in which we swim!

    August 2, 2017
    • Shelley is always a pleasure …. And for me, too evocative of my youth. I love that Stranglers song though sadly it is said to be about heroine and opiate traders, a fact which I have tended to ignore over the decades. I hope the water clears a little …. I don’t want to collide with any less than charming fish!!

      August 3, 2017
  10. The poem is lovely, of course, as is the image of your sheet-whispering, but I am infatuated with the video. One, I had never heard the song before, which speaks ill of my cultural capabilities even though I did quite enjoy it, and two, those four little dancers off to the side doing whatever it is they’re doing is just… spell-binding…

    August 2, 2017
    • The song is about heroine and the opiate trade which is a) why I didn’t headline it …. too taxing fending off the commentaries and b) may account for the dancers c) I couldn’t get the link to appear properly but felt it would just have to do d) I so love your wandering eye and there is no e) 😆

      August 3, 2017
  11. OK, I’m inspired. Post coming forthwith!

    August 2, 2017
    • This makes me happy!

The picture is as gorgeous as it is surreal.. I find the sky a painting in waiting.. Anytime day or night.. When I was home visiting dad, we were captivated and speechless (except ohs and ahhs) watching a spectacular sunset..
I managed to take a pic and have it in my next video post, just because it was so “wow”..

The poem has bite.. Poems that possess a coherent story, are the most beautiful, in my opinion.. I was glad to read and reread it.. Probably will again..

Ironic that the song was about heroin and also a woman.. I found the music and vocals additive in a mesmerizing way.. But I also heard an off note and timing, reminding me of carnival music.. I’m not sure what instrument (keyboard mabye?)
The song was well performed.. It’s not my listening music, but I don’t have to be a fan of a specific art to respect that its art 😉

    So glad you’re back !!!!! 🙆
I’m starting a 4 day vacation friday and hoping to get much done.. I know no service.. I have almost 0 % data up there.. So I will be feeling that loss as well, except when I come into town 😂

    August 2, 2017
    • The offnote is on the keyboard. The Stranglers were huge in the UK punk scene in the late 70s early 80s but we’re actually influenced musically by 60s bands like The Animals. The song is indeed mesmerising which I believe was deliberate given it’s meaning. I deliberately avoided showcasing it too hard for the very reason that I felt people would feel the need to educate me on it’s subject matter. The truth is I tend to ignore it, preferring to enjoy it on face value which is the only way I can. The poem is an enduring friend of mine- Shelley was a maestro of the bittersweet and captivating in his dextrus use of nature in his work. The picture was one of a huge slough taken on that beach. Two Brains and I ohhed and ahhed plenty! I wouldn’t have minded the no Wi-Fi if I was in Cantal but I’m in a city where I had naively imagined it would be simple!!@ 😂😂

      August 3, 2017
      • Pan #

Nothing seems simple with data connections.. They are fickle..
I liked The Animals in their heyday.. The irony connection was addictive music about an addictive substance.. I took a moment to read up on them since I’d never heard of them before.. The carnival type tune I picked up on is what I found unpleasant but I couldn’t stop listening til it was over.. When I read about the song, I laughed and said to myself, no wonder I couldn’t stop listening ! Just my warped mind working.. Sorry about expounding on what you were trying to avoid.. 💛

You have an array of diverse and interesting friends !!! When you have get togethers, I bet there’s never a dull moment 😮

        August 3, 2017
      • I had never thought of it as carnival music before but of course you are right. Funny story: around the same time, when I lived I London and was free and single, fly posters started appearing for an Eric Burden (The Animals) revival concert…. he billed it the ‘f*** me, I thought he was dead! Tour’ … I remember snorting out loud the first time I saw a poster …. really wish I’d had the guys to pinch one! Never apologise – I value your need to resear h rather than blithely listen (a trait we share) and most of all I value you and hope that sometime I the not too distant we really can make that rendezvous (Two Brains, by the way feels just the same) 😊

        August 3, 2017
      • Pan #

I just reread your comment.. I need better glasses.. I thought it read “the poet”.. 🙃
But I still bet you and Two Brains have an interesting social pack 😊

        August 3, 2017
      • Haha … I do count a few poets as friends – one or two from way back then. But not as far back as Shelley because that would be beyond weird 😂😂😂😂

        August 3, 2017
      • Pan #

😂 yeah, if I’d done my due diligence and looked him up.. that comment wouldn’t have happened.. 😂 eh.. made us chuckle 👍

The meet will be great fun here and hopefully again in France someday as well..
Online friendships rarely run deep, this is one of those exceptions.. 😊

        August 3, 2017
      • It did! Another follower thought The Bean was my husband today …. made me screach with laughter (and then had to find a diplomatic way of telling her 😄). There and here must be done. I have to see your haven in Maine and you have to see Maison Carrée. I’ve never been one for many friends but you are one of the true few. And Weird Guy. I’m very fortunate ☺💛💛💛☺

        August 4, 2017
      • Pan #

Is there a diplomatic way to say, My husband is Two Brains and The Bean is our dog ?
I guess it would depend on the person but I’d be so tempted to be snarky.. Like maybe,
The Bean thanks you for the promotion to human status but would prefer to stay canine 😉

😂 Good thing I don’t prefer an army of friends.. I probably couldn’t keep them all..
Blessed with the ones I have 💛

        August 4, 2017
      • I use said it and she took it on the chin … she’s a really nice lady. The Bean turned human …. boggling!! Et toi? Just be you … you is really special 💛

        August 5, 2017
  13. You have been missed….but really happy that you have landed and the nest is built!! Love the poem, I am coping it into my grimoire…..to use at a latter date….I loved the idea of standing on the edge of the US and leaving it all behind me….the asshat that is running the government…aghhhh don’t get me started I will never start….its like a bad movie….you don’t even have to go to a comedy club, just watch the news and whoolah your left laughing till you cry…..xkat

    August 3, 2017
    • Try sitting at dinner with bewildered French people who want you to Explain a) why Brexit because you are British and b) why Trump because your husband is a US citizen … I’ve perfected eye-rolling!! More on the best later and I’m so glad you liked the poem – I think it’s near perfect ☺ xx

      August 3, 2017
      • I agree near perfect….hey lots of eye rolling going on over here tooo….

        August 5, 2017
  14. Kate Nelson #

Ah my darling outlaw. I missed you. Others have already commented on the genius of Shelley. So it is left to me to congratulate you for own brilliant mind and particularly for reminding us of the uncoordinated dubious talents of Pans People….or whatever TOTP dancers called themselves in 1982. Made my morning….your second dance throw-back of the week. Keep them coming! PS: I guess the poem and beautiful photo pass muster too 😉

    August 3, 2017
    • Haha … the girl on the left is me – didn’t you realise 😉 Thank you for always being so supportive, Kate!

      August 3, 2017
  15. welcome back…. a beautiful picture and a beautiful poem…… both are lovely….

    August 3, 2017
    • Thank you so much … I’m glad you enjoyed them 🙂

      August 3, 2017
  16. You have a poet’s soul Osyth, which I deeply admire while being a bit too much of this earth to follow very far into the éphemère. The poem is indeed enchanting and accessible even to me. And what a wonderful 80s vibe you share in that track! But do end the suspense: where on earth (or elsewhere) have you landed???

    August 3, 2017
    • I think poetry is just another escape for me …. and I only read it – I’m far to rambly to write it! The Stranglers remain favourites to this day and that track is mesmeric. As are the dancers – I actually wore those clothes. No wonder I’m damaged!! You’ll have to be in suspenders for a little longer. I have a post following later to reveal my new whereabouts. x

      August 3, 2017
      • @”I think poetry is just another escape for me…” – same here, since my high-school years… 🙂

        August 6, 2017
      • No surprise 🙂

        August 6, 2017
  17. You are opening my eyes to the beauty of Shelly.

    August 3, 2017
    • I am very happy that I am. Thank you for dropping in and leaving a comment – it is much appreciated 🙂

      August 3, 2017
  18. Some words imprint, with meaning even before we understand what they mean! Glad you have settled and your are now internet connected. Looking forward to a more regular dose of Osyth.

    August 3, 2017
    • Thank you Claudette …its a lovely incentive to have those I value wanting a little of what I offer 🙂

      August 3, 2017
      • I want a lot of what you offer 🙂 I enjoy it immensely – think that’s the ting about blogging – connecting with thoughts and experiences from people all over the world.

        August 4, 2017
  19. Beautiful picture, beautiful poem, beautiful person – welcome back, missed you and your added comfort to my life. Truly.

    August 3, 2017
  20. Oh, I just loooove this poem, Osyth! It´s beyond beautiful, just as your amazing Cape Cod picture! And I´m so glad your wifi is installed and you´re back! Can´t wait to read about your new home!! xxxxxxxxxxxx

P.S. I´m sure you remember that post in which I wrote about the lovely cards send by my friend Melissa some time ago? Well, I´ve had some second thoughts about sending those handmade cards to my friends here on WP… I´m not going to write a post about it or offer to do this for everyone following me (always feels weird to write “following me”, makes me think of a cute little dog hanging on my heels 😉 ) because I think it would be too much for me, but I really want to send cards to those friends that have become very dear to me here, and, well, you´re clearly one of them and I wondered if you´d like one??? Actually it would be awful if you said no, because I already made it!! 😉 Just send me a short email with your address and the card is on its way! (You can find my email address on my about page 😉 ). Have a lovely day! 🙂 xxxxxxx

    August 3, 2017
    • You bring tears to my eyes … if laughter imagining all those tiny dogs flocking at your heels and of delight that you consider me enough. Thank you. And I am doubly thrilled that you enjoyed my very slim post. Shelley helps, of course …. really those words are amongst the finest. And I will. Send the email. Thank you dearest sweet soul. Thank you xxxxxxxxx

      August 3, 2017
      • Oooh! Yippiehh! I´m so perfectly thrilled that you said yes!!!! 😀 I fear I will scare off all those tiny dogs with my jumping up and down! 😉
Hope you will like the card – it´s been especially designed for you 😉 – hope that made you awfully curious now 😉 Much love! xxxxxxx

        August 3, 2017
      • Extremely curious! xxxxxx

        August 3, 2017
  21. I love the Shelley poem, which I didn’t know previously. Also the photo, which captures perfectly the textures theme. I’m glad you are now settled, even if only temporarily.

    August 3, 2017
    • Thank you. It is a lovely poem. Temporary is better than none. I count my blessings. Mostly 🙄

      August 3, 2017
    • PS: If you are a fan of ‘Lewis’ there was a wonderful episode called ‘And the moonbeans kiss the sea’ …

      August 3, 2017
  22. I wonder who Shelley had in mind when he wrote this….but too idle today to look up the dates and make a conjecture.

Given general French bewilderment about Brexit and Trump you could start a new career in giving classes in eye rolling. If French women can give classes to American women on how to wear scarves, then you can certainly corner the eye rolling market.

Mark you, the French have Macron…who are they to point fingers!

    August 3, 2017
    • Well he was a bit of a hussy in fairness. Harriet and Mary and who knows who else. I had a major poet-crush on him in my early teens after which I moved on to dirtier poets like Lawrence! I think it was easier for Me to list after long dead poets than live rock stars. I think the eye rolling idea may have legs … as a small child I could roll them each independently, something my Uncle pointed out to my mother was not at all normal. It turned out I’d got a tremendous squint which was treated successfully…. shame really- I imagine I might have made a fortune as a viral gif these days 😃

      August 3, 2017
  23. I thought I was the only just-teen who memorized poems just so she could say them to herself.

Memorizing poetry is a funny thing. My father sometimes sits in his chair looking out the window reciting poems that he memorized as a boy. It kinds of delightful.

    August 3, 2017
    • I’m glad there is another! And I’m glad your father has all those childhood verses taped into his mind …. I think that is very beautiful 🙂

      August 3, 2017
  24. May be not enchanted but enamored by the words flowing like spirit inside the soul. Sheer beauty. Hope you settling well in your nest:)

    August 3, 2017
    • Enamoured is fine by me! Your description of the effect of Shelley’ s verse is superlative. The best is also a delight. I’m happy to roost here for a while ☺

      August 3, 2017
      • Where are you btw? Seems like an out of the world place 🙂

        August 3, 2017
      • ThAt That was Cape Cod, Massachusetts last Autumn but right now I am in Grenoble, SE France. Real home is me Cantal Cabal in Southern France 🙂

        August 3, 2017
      • Woah you such a globe trotter. Amazing. Travel and going to new places is such an education.

        August 3, 2017
      • My husband is a Professor at Harvard University hence the Boston connection. France is really home for me though I was born in England and three of my daughter’s are there. To complicate it even more my other daughter is in Kuala Lumpur and my brothers in Australia and Bahrain!

        August 3, 2017
      • That’s what I say is a true global family. My boss is from London and a place that I’d love to visit like France.

        August 4, 2017
      • France is many splendoured … large and diverse. If you get the chance let me know… I’m happy to act as your guide! London is a country in itself- I love visiting and always feel energised but I don’t Thu k I could live there again!

        August 4, 2017
  25. @”Thoreau spoke much sense that resonates today. If you let it.” – oh yes, Lady-O… I reread his works and I often use his common sense quotes – all full of pure wisdom… 🙂
    * * *
    ah, Percy Bysshe Shelley… <3 telepathy does work… 😉

    August 3, 2017
    • I remembered you are an admirer of Thoreau… pure wisdom from you too 😉 And Shelley? Of course you would love and understand him. One of the greatest Romantics could not pass you by 😙

      August 3, 2017
  26. Glad you’ve landed safely if only temporarily. The Shelley is simply delightful and delightfully simple. I can see why you love it. Somehow I appreciate Thoreau more knowing that he went home for his meals and to get his laundry done. He didn’t feel he had to carve his own niche in virgin forest and wrestle grizzly bears to appreciate nature.

    August 3, 2017
    • Quite the opposite…. I think he was a most sensible man. I’m glad you liked the Shelley… I thought of you when I chose it. Don’t ever doubt that you are every bit as capable of weaving delight with your words.

      August 3, 2017
      • As long as I can stay off the substances…

        August 3, 2017
      • He was not exactly good at monogamy either but you can cherry pick the bits to keep. The ability really. Stick with that!!

        August 3, 2017
      • Nobody’s perfect. And I’m not sure you can get pure opium any more.

        August 3, 2017
      • 😇

        August 3, 2017
      • 🙂

        August 3, 2017
  27. One of my favorite songs! Glad to hear that you are back in the ether with us. The texture of the photograph is so lovely and evocative. As for the poignant poem, I now need a kiss – where is my cat??? 💋🐱

    August 3, 2017
    • Finally someone who knows the song! I naively thought everyone knew it … it’s one of my favourites too you kiss the cat, I’ll miss the dog … haven’t seen Two Brains since July 8th 🙁

      August 3, 2017
  28. Awww! You can pounce on Two Brains when he returns and shower him with kisses. 😍

    August 3, 2017
    • 13th August … only 10 days and he’s MINE!!!! 😉 xx

      August 3, 2017
  29. “Welcome back” he says as he “crackles” excitedly in the wings.” Happy to hear your settled in your new abode 🙂 Love the poem, but of course no surprise as I’m another romantic as you know.

    August 3, 2017
    • I would have wagered quite a tidy sum that you would love the poem, Andrew. Thank you for your welcomes they are … welcome! 😊

      August 3, 2017
  30. Fiona, Thank you for sharing that poem, as I read every word, I could relate to it so much. And indeed I’m enchanted by it. I’m probably going to use it in future for one of my posts 🙂 The photo reflects theme perfectly!! -Cheers, Charu

    August 4, 2017
    • Charu, I am so happy that you loved the poem. I have never tired of it. I look forward to seeing it nestled into one of your beautiful posts …. can only imagine the pictures and I know they will be beautiful 💛

      August 4, 2017
      • I hope I will be able to do justice to your expectations😁😁

        August 4, 2017
  31. Ah, you are settled back in – lovely! The poem is quite enchanting and the photo calls me to the Cape. i think we will travel to visit friends there next week. Roxie will not take this well at all. Thank you for the beautiful thoughts to fill my weekend.

    August 4, 2017
    • I’m so glad you like the poem ☺ Please give my love to The Cape…. I was truly enchanted by it and find myself daydreaming me into it quite often. ‘Roxie Dammit, I am happy to petition on your behalf. We can set up a Facebook page …. people get very het up about animal neglect and cruelty. Yours is a clear cut case. I remain your true and devoted friend and ally. The Bean 🐾🐾 #rights4roxie’ 💛

  32. This is absolutely gorgeous. A great photography and a beautiful poem!

    August 4, 2017
    • Thank you Sumith …. I’m glad it hit the spot!

  33. Gorgeously textured photo Osyth, and it merges well with the poem. I confess I was a T.S. Eliot-liking adolescent and the Romantics never caught me. Obviously a deficiency on my part. I always liked The Stranglers though, and this song, whatever it is about ☺ Thanks for the link. Glad you are settling in and got connected eventually.

    • Eliot arrived about 2 years later when I was 15 and stayed. Prufrock began it … but doesn’t he always? I was a big poetry reader and a big music listener but far to shy to put any of the notions postulated in poems or songs into practice. I love The Strangles and I’m with you …. the meaning of Golden Brown is irrelevant to me … the way it washes through ones mind is gorgeous, I’ve always thought ☺

      August 5, 2017
  34. Thanks for sharing the Shelley…I shall dream of moonbeams tonight! Can’t wait for more half-baked drivel.

    August 6, 2017
    • Thank you so much! ThAt is the nicest comment …. ☺

      August 6, 2017
  35. Wow – that poem is SO beautiful! I’m glad you’re getting sorted in your new abode and can’t wait to hear about your shenanigans in due course.. Thanks also for the little trip down memory lane with that Stranglers Video, which links perfectly with your wonderful photo. No wonder you cast that poem to memory Osyth!

    August 6, 2017
    • Glad you enjoyed it, Wendy. It remains a favourite as does Golden Brown. Some things stay with us. I’d better get on with an update on life in general, I think xx

      August 6, 2017
      • They do and I think music and poetry particularly evoke ‘the original moment’ memory immediately.. Yep – get your writing head on.. it’s definitely time to put us out of our suspenders.. x

        August 6, 2017
      • Yes’m!! xx

        August 6, 2017
  36. First of all i ‘d like to say yay….you have now a descent data connection and that you are settled..

And second i love Thoreau and Shelley…you reminded me of thew days when i was teaching English Literature..ahhhh sigh..i miss those time..

    August 6, 2017
    • Thank you …. it was a huge relief! No surprise that you were a teacher of English Literature … your use of the language is sublime. I try to have a rule ‘no rear view mirror’ but I must admit that the times that were best in my life it is hard not to hanker over. That you don’t teach any more is not quite true, you know … you teach with your poetry and artistry with language all the time. And it is clear that you have your roots in great literature 🙂

      August 6, 2017
      • Oh thanks Osyth…it warms my heart to read your thoughts…
Sometimes though we are reminded of the things we were (are?) good at, then, boom!!!..you know what i mean? Some people are paid to do something they don’t like; when i was in the academe i was paid to do something i was very passionate about and for me twas a blessing…that’s why i missed it so much…being with the young sharing my thoughts about literature is really wonderful .

        August 6, 2017
  37. P.S..actually you.made me kinda emotional now…(lol)…its been years since i left the Academe and i thought i’m fine..but here i am..wallowing…(sigh)…

    August 6, 2017
  38. Lovely photos, with the added bonus of Shelley at his finest. I can see why that song came to your mind too, though as I always call it ‘Gordon Brown’ it may not have the same effect for me! Good to hear that your move was successful and that you’ve managed to get life’s essentials installed 😊 xx

  39. I enjoy the richness of this tapestry you offer us. Each element is worthy of being seen, read, and heard over again as I meander from one to the next.

    August 7, 2017
    • What a delightful thing to say … I’m very happy that you enjoyed a peaceful meander 🙂

  40. You’re back with a bang. Shelly was the subject of another blogger’s post recently. Something in the air? Looking forward to more of your “half baked” posts which always strike me as well cooked and lovingly prepared, by the way. (Have you discovered Simon Johnson’s blog? https://simonjohnsonofclowne.com/2017/07/30/time-travelling-in-the-british-museum/ I think you’d like his posts.

    August 8, 2017
    • Thank you Susanne … that is a lovely thing to say. The truth is that my writing is rather like my kitchen – chaotic and spontaneous but hopefully the results are generally reasonable :). Now. I am off to really explore Simon Johnson. I’ve just read the article you linked me to and I love it. How did you guess? Shelley, incidentally is mostly in the air Chez moi and Ozymandius was my father’s favourite poem 🙂

  41. Welcome to that little voice and thank you for following my blog.

    August 12, 2017
    • No thanks required – I’m delighted to have found you with a bit of a shove from the superstar that is Brian at Bonnywood. I’m so looking forward to hearing your little voice 🙂

  42. I love this poem, Osyth. And, I’m happy you’re settled into your new place. Looking forward to more of your posts! 🙂

    • I’m just back from a couple of days away (my husband is here for a week and we like to squeeze every ounce of goodness out of our times together) but I will be back and writing in the next few … I’m glad this little post hit the spot – I love Shelley and Love’s Philosophy is such a little gem!

      August 17, 2017
      • Your post was perfect! Enjoy some special time together with your beloved. 🙂🌻

        August 17, 2017
  43. I adore poetry of all kinds but Thoreau and Shelley are two of the finest well know poets! So wonderful to read one that has been ages since I read! Thank you for sharing the golden glowing and shimmering brown water. Ripples and shimmers abound!
The Strangler’s are so iconic and fitting the early 80’s, Fiona! My grown kids liked a few others with synthesizer music while I must admit a piano or simple guitar riff will send me into nostalgic rapture. (70’s girl I am) xo 💖
Enjoy and hopefully, the week with your dear, special husband went S l o w l y! I hate when time speeds up when I want to linger in the moments. 😉

    • I’m so glad to have reminded you of that beautiful poem. Shelley was in some ways the guilty pleasure of my adolescence – I didn’t shout him from the rooftops but I had his lines scribbled in my journal to share just with me. There were many others too but he held quite a fascination at a young age. Thoreau, I do believe to be the wisest of men and so much of what he wrote resonates today. If only people would listen …. The Stranglers coincided with me going to College. I have a great love for 70s music in general but disengaged somewhat when disco took over … I preferred the New Wave in England which spawned so many bands but The Stranglers with their keyboard riffs to me were better musicians and resonant of The Animals who I also love. So much music just transports me instantly to time and place and much of it from a time when I wasn’t even born but it can still evoke wonderful feelings and memories – Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard instantly bring back my dad teaching me to jive in a ski resort in Switzerland aged about 8. My husband has been gone again a week already. Time is quite mean in its ambling when waiting and racing when enjoying. But the trick is to go with it and drink every drop 💧 – we both know that. Thank you for your lovely comment dear Robyn – I do so enjoy hearing from you (when you have time in that super busy life of yours!!!) xo
