I’ve Been Everywhere, Man

Welcome to ‘Melting-Pot Monday’. To kick off this new series, The Bean has hijacked my keyboard to give us her reflections on being an intrepid tiny four pawed traveler:

It’s not easy being Bean. My job is to be faithful, loyal and unerringly stoic which skills I have in amazing quantities. But despite my dazzling talent, I don’t get any say in where I will be at any time. They discuss and debate and I doggedly jog alongside them. This goes for walks, runs and hikes and for bigger journeys that require cars or trains or planes.

When They are packing for one of these journeys I get quite anxious and I sit sentinel in my basket beadily scanning for signs that the car door may open whence I stealthily nip in and refuse to move. I worry, you see, that in their grandeose plans, they may entirely and completely forget me.

I am ten human years old. When I was half this age, She took me repeatedly to that house where the person sticks spikes in my neck and pokes me and peers in my ears and my eyes and then writes things with a pen-stick and after three times She was happy because the spiking person gave her a book with my name in it called a ‘Pet Passing Port’. This book gets taken with us every time we travel. When we travel to see my friends in the old country I have to have a filthy tasting pill forced down my throat through my resolutely clamped jaw.  This is the foul tablet which the French man who has also been known to spike my scruff from time to time claims is ‘un petit bon-bon Français’. That is a despicable lie. It is not a sweetie, it is no sort of candy.   It is vile and it is designed to make my tummy feel very delicate and undulous.  They say it empties me of worms but since I don’t have any wrigglers anywhere on or in my person it is a worthless cruelty. More recently, after we moved our place to Grenoble I got a better spiking doctor who gives me a meat flavored treat which they say does the same thing. I like the doctor who gives me meats.  I do not like the one who tells lies and pushes the wretched pill down my throat with gigantic  tweezers the size of Edward Scissorhands’ knife-fingers. He needs to be avoided which I did try to show Her whenever we went to his house. I would go on sit down strike but She would act as though She didn’t understand and would pick me up and carry me in. This is the worst think about being of petite and portable proportions.  I will give you his address if you contact me discretely.  You really do need this information so that you can be sure to avoid him. She thought he was nice, by the way, but He even had the temerity to jest that it is amusing and ironic that She, an English woman, has to pay him, a Frenchman, many euros to allow me, an English dog, back into my own country. He clearly doesn’t understand that I speak very good French and don’t really even remember living in that England, though I very much like to visit, and that I find it offensive that he dares make light of this dastardly situation. It is not at all ironic it is just undignified and rather rude. Come the glorious day when my true worth is recognized he will regret his facetiousness. This is my pledge.

Since I got my passing port I have travelled to France, Switzerland, Germany and the USA. Plus visits back to the England place.  I have driven many thousands of miles by car (about 90,000 at the last count which is around 145,000 km) and I have taken very fast trains. But the bit that humans are most interested in is that I do flying. Because I am sensibly svelte and compact in size, I am allowed to fly in the cabin with Them. I have to go in a bag which is rather a slight and I have to be weighed in the bag to make sure that our combined weight is acceptable.  Then I am welcomed by the nice food trolley people and I am stowed under the seat in front of Her. The first time I flyed was from Clermont Ferrand to Paris and then from Paris to Boston. When we got to Boston they let me out of the bag and I pooed on His foot. Since then they have cruelly deprived me of food until we land safely and are through all the controls where the humans look at my passing port and ask if I have brought food with us.  I don’t – I eat local food wherever I am.  Truthfully, I mainly just like to eat, and I am happiest with anything that falls from the table when They are eating but I will make do with what they call ‘dog food’ if forced – how silly is that … all food is dog food.  Obviously.  I like restaurants for this reason. I find that if shimmy into my most appealing and cute pose, people ask if they can pet me and then, when they are at their most vulnerable, I take my  limpid eyes up to Mach 3-charming and they ask if they can give me a tidbit. This is a skill I advise all dogs to learn well. It is truly life-enhancing.

He says that I kept Her afloat during the 5 years after they were married that we were not all together most of the time. I took my role as Her fierce protector seriously and it was quite tiring and I was always happy when He was with us. Now we can all be together and I can relax. Life is good in this new place. It is called Boston and in Boston they are very keen on beans.   She says people can learn a lot from my attitude which is really the attitude of all dogs that are fortunate to have humans of their own. She says that being simple and uncomplicated and enjoying the moment and loving where you are even if it isn’t the place you thought you wanted to be in, is a good way to live a life. She says that being fortunate is not counted in gold coins or sunshine but in the warmth you feel in your heart. I think she sometimes speaks some sense. Particularly when she says its supper time …..

PS: I am writing this from one of my favourite places in the wide, wide world. My humans are away from home for a week so they put me in my kennels which I really love. It is also the house of the local spiking man but he is one of the good spiking men. I love him and all the others in this house SO much that when we came to see him just after we arrived to make sure I was tickety-boo, I launched myself off her knee and did a full barrel-roll in the air which would have been of perfectly Cirque du Soleil standard had I not mildly misjudged my elevation and grounded with my back. I’m pretty sure I got away with the duff landing because Doctor Spiker was clearly very impressed and said it is not normally a problem he encounters that a dog is excited to be at this place. But I do love them. Because they are kind to me, I do love them. The law of the dog is quite simple, you see … all we need is love and we will absorb it and process it and give it back at a ratio that fantastically exceeds the original.

À bientôt

The Bean

And your bonus is Mr Johnny Cash. He is singing a song that Her Daddy loved and I have used it as my title for this piece of unabashed brilliance because I know it will make her smile.  I hope you will too.  I wonder if any of you can sing every single word without tripping up …..

A note from the Editor in Chief (that’s me, Osyth) …. I have decided to join the Fandango One Word Challenge from time to time because I think initiatives that aim to fill the void left by the WordPress decision to halt their challenges should be supported.  The absolute essence of this post is that a simple outlook is generally helpful, I am submitting it to the cauldron of other entries here    #FOWC

  1. I like that “The Bean” has more frequent flier miles than I do!

    June 4, 2018
    • I was dropping my daughter at the airport in Grenoble in March and The Bean was with us. A Smart Alec fellow said to his friend ‘ha! I wonder if that thing’ll be on the plane with us’ to which my daughter retorted …. ‘that thing has more air miles than you I can guarantee’ 😂

      June 4, 2018
      • HA! “That Thing!”

        June 4, 2018
  2. This is great…has the makings for a wonderful children’s book. 🙂

    June 4, 2018
    • Thank you so much Debbie …. she doesn’t often take to the keyboard but occasionally I let her loose!

      June 4, 2018
  3. Love it.

    June 4, 2018
    • You are much too kind …. and I thank you because you have rather made my day!

      June 4, 2018
  4. I love this travel report Bean and I´m so pleased you are happy where you are right now. You are not only well travelled but a good looking little dog. No wonder everyone loves you. I just went to France with my human parents in the car. It was Ok but I don´t think I would like to fly. Your doggie pal, Dot the dog. bow wow.

    June 4, 2018
    • Having met The Bean I can tell you that she is quite the quirkiest and cutest small dog with big ears that I have ever been acquainted with.

      June 4, 2018
      • You missed off feistiest …. if ever a tiny creature had no notion of her actual size, it’s The Bean! She loved our time together and I can’t wait to get back to France so that she and Bronte can continue their faltering first steps at bonding. I am convinced that they could make a lovely odd pair of friends given time x

        June 4, 2018
    • Salut Dot! Thank you for leaving me a message. I am glad you think I am good-looking …. I wasn’t very good at working the photo-editor so it was a bit pot-luck! I like it where I am … there are plenty of opportunities for running and chasing chipmunks and sunning myself and of course eating. It’s a dogs life 😉 Flying is not so bad. I tend to find the noise lulls me to sleep and I don’t even make a squeak anymore. The first flight was the worst one because I didn’t understand but now I know what to expect and mostly I know I will get food at the other end ….. 🐾 🐾

  5. I love the Johnny Cash song. A favourite of my dad´s as well.

    June 4, 2018
    • That makes me very happy, Darlene – our Dad’s had good taste, I think 😊

      June 4, 2018
  6. Dear Little B, so good to hear from you and to know you are well and happy. Please tell Fiona that I share her love for dogs and Johnny Cash. My son plays in a quite good Johnny Cash tribute band on if they are ever in your neck of the woods I will let you know.
    Big B

    June 4, 2018
    • Dear Big B …. I have told Her and she is very excited. She loves JC and she would travel down just to see that band! I am very well and very happy …. She says it doesn’t take much. I think that is simply sensible! 🐾 🐾

  7. For a brief moment, I thought that was a younger photo of Vinnie. No wonder you and John are such good friends. Toffee says to Bean, “My mummy can no longer take me to the spikey person because I turn into something called an exorcist cat”. 😸

    June 4, 2018
    • I first commented on John’s blog when I saw Vinnie – he and The Bean are very alike indeed. John is a lovely man. I have met such lovely people in this place. You are another, as I hope you know. As for Toffee …. the image of her with the Spiking Person in full Exorcist mode has made my day!!!

      June 4, 2018
      • She totally trashed our Egyptian Vet’s office and after the whirlwind was over, we found her in one of his desk drawers. Maybe she is part Djinn?

        June 5, 2018
      • Maybe part Djinn? 🧞‍♀️ Definitely, I would say! I can only imagine the vet’s though generally they seem to take most things in their stride with their patients. I always think they are remarkable people …. being able to deal with all those different species and temperaments and no discernable language to help.

        June 6, 2018
      • LOL! I completely understand Toffee’s Carabic…

        June 6, 2018
  8. Why is it that after listening to the Johnny Cash i have visions of The Bean upright at the wheel of some mighty juggernaut on her way to wreak vengeance on the first vet….

    June 4, 2018
    • Falling about with laughter at that image …. this may be dangerous – she’s a dark horse that Bean!!

      June 4, 2018
  9. Bronte the fickle( who has just dumped me for my friend who sucked all the salt of a peanut for her so it didn’t damage her delicate doggy constitution) would like to know if The Dust Bean is up for a dog-off?

    June 4, 2018
    • The Dust Bean is up for pretty much anything. She also understands perfectly the fine art of being fickle!!

      June 4, 2018
  10. Squee. American-ese for WOW!!! Brief intro: I’m Princess Diamond the Hunydog. Pleasedtomeetcha Bean! You’ve actually met Vinnie?? How cool is THAT? Both of you are beautiful, in the way that all dogs are. Now, I’m not as well traveled as you are, my hoomin prefers staying in her house and unless it’s a short trip, she doesn’t take me. I usually go to Taco’s house (he’s a good friend of mine, and one of my clan “The Clan of the Chihuahua”). He looks a whole lot like me, just like Vinnie looks a whole lot like you! I’m glad to see a dog post…I follow a few of them, but you’re the first (besides Vinnie and he didn’t say too much), that was my size. The other dog bloggers are big dogs and they seem to have a different perspective on things from we wee ones. Warning. The Stick Men (and women) are here too. I had to go last week because I pooed where I shouldn’t have, and in a quantity that freaked my hoomin out. My favorite stick woman wasn’t there, so I had to see a guy, but I am not too frightened of him either…only tried to climb my hoomin three times, and sat behind her head on her shoulders, as is only logical in those places where it smells of bad things and they put those sticker things IN you. I’ll be reading more as you share. I speak better Spanish than French, and of course I speak Dog-ese the BEST (influence is Chihuahua obviously)…but I’m going to try:

Howdy de l’Utah. Bienvenue aux États-Unis! Tu es un très beau chien et c’est un plaisir de savoir quelque chose de toi!

    or in Spanish:

Hola de Utah. ¡Bienvenido de nuevo a los Estados. Usted es un perro más hermoso y es un placer saber algo de ustedes!

    June 4, 2018
    • Salut Princess Diamond the Hunydog (that is a splendiferous and truly fitting name for a dog by the way). I haven’t actually MET Vinnie yet but our Two Leggeds are working on it. She has been pretty chaotic since we arrived but Mr Vinnie lives in Maine which is pretty close to here I went there in 2016 – I stayed in a cabin called ‘Moose’ which was next door to ‘Bear’ but the important thing was the main house which is called an ‘Inn’ which was where we had breakfast. The lady there made lots of nice things with cheese and eggs. I like cheese and eggs. And meats. And baked things. I like food ….. sorry – went off piste with my stomach again 😉 So I am half chihuahua (in France they say I am ‘batard’ which means ‘bastard’ which is very rude in English … people talk is pretty strange if you are bilingual like we is). I would like to speak Spanish because it is half of my heritage. Perhaps you can teach me. I can teach you French (you speak some already I note). It’s useful in France. France is nice. The food is very good – they love meats and cheeses and pâtisserie and wine but I don’t eat wine. I am sorry about your bad poos. I get bad poos sometimes too. I think you were very brave at the stick people place. Please can I be in your clan too. With Taco. Which is a very excellent name. You are very pretty by the way. We Wash are the best looking dogs n’est-ce pas? Toodlepip as my Granny in the England place says. I love her. I will write some more soon when I can get a moment of peace to channel my high thoughts. We dogs must be heard and especially us tinies.

      June 6, 2018
  11. I am extremely jaded, not to mention deathly afraid of dogs (Bean would have me on a chair, or locked in the bathroom), yet you managed to entice me enough to read it all and even chuckle. Which is quite a feat.
The suggestion for a children’s book is a good one.
Best of luck in the new setting!!!

    June 4, 2018
    • She would love you because you would not instantly think that she wants to be patted. Very like my eldest daughter as a child, she hates people assuming she wants to interact. So if our paths every cross terrestrially you and I can chat and she will lie under her customary blanket like a furry parrot!

      June 6, 2018
  12. All the time I was reading this I was trying to imagine shoving Finbar into a bag…

    June 4, 2018
    • I was at Genève Airport once waiting for a bag that had been sent as ‘special baggage’ for reasons I can’t now remember and a large crate containing a Pyrénéen Mountain dog came down the Shute …. I don’t know who was more surprised – it or I!

      June 6, 2018
      • Poor thing! At least it survived the baggage hold.

        June 6, 2018
      • I have to say that I am glad The Bean is so small (she weighs less than 4kg) because I would not want to put a dog in the hold. Too many horrible stories. The Bean has a part two to this tale which will highlight the absolute selfishness of human travellers.

        June 6, 2018
      • Are you going to write about the human travellers who take up two seats? 4 kilos! Even our little Ninnie weighs more than that.

        June 6, 2018
      • I sat behind one of them on a flight from Washington yesterday. Fortunately she was in the kennels because I think the seat which she would have been put under would have squished her. As it was the incumbent was in one of the exit rows. The Brains pondered loudly on whether it would be able to move in an emergency or whether we would all be prevented from escape by this fat cork! She is very tiny. But I must emphasize that she is very feisty too 😉

        June 6, 2018
      • First reading I thought you meant the fatty was in the kennels. If baggage has to be weighed so should people. I might get half price that way 🙂

        June 6, 2018
      • She wouldn’t have fitted at all 😊

        June 6, 2018
      • Probably not. Wonder if she paid for two seats?

        June 6, 2018
      • Oh I’m sure she didn’t – just made life uncomfortable for the people around her. Hey ho.

        June 6, 2018
      • You can probably be prosecuted for fatism if you complain.

        June 6, 2018
      • Sans doute …. what an offing stupid world we live in! A wise fellow once said to me ‘the problem now is that the rights of the individual outweigh the rights of the masses’ …. tis so.

        June 6, 2018
      • But not the rights of the massive 🙂

        June 6, 2018
      • 😀

        June 6, 2018
  13. Dear Bean,
Welcome! Your limpid eyes really are quite magical. Please don’t teach that trick to Maggie, though. I have a hard enough time not giving her treats every time she runs in the house ahead of me and sits in my path expectantly with her aren’t-I-a-good-dog look? Limpid would do me in — and not be good for her waistline either.

I enjoyed reading about your passing port because I’ve wondered how things like that work.

I’ve also noticed the fire hydrants and fake grass in the airports for travelers such as you. Sorry you pooed on His shoe before making it to the fake grass. Between you and me, have you ever tested the fake grass in the airports?

I look forward to hearing more of your adventures.

    Maggie’s person, Sally

    June 4, 2018
    • Dear Sally

She is very cruel and often ignores my limpid eyes. He is easier to crack. Strangers are a cinch but you have to pick the right ones 😉

I have tried the fake grass at Logan and at Charles de Gaulle. It’s OK but of course it doesn’t fool anyone particularly high thinkers. Which all dogs are. My friends Brian and Barry who live in London have fake grass in their garden.

I might tell the story of how I came to be with Her next. That was quite the adventure …..

      🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  14. My dog Heidi is very jealous of The Bean and wishes she had equal travel experience and writing skills! She is content to exhibit her total belief in the dog law – the receiving and giving of love!

    June 4, 2018
    • Heidi is an exemplar of what actually matters in life …. all the rest is just adornment really 😊

      June 6, 2018
  15. Ah, the revenge of the poo-on-the-foot gambit. Too bad it backfired (ho, ho – pun not intended but still, pretty good, eh?) on the Bean. Life lessons from pooches tend to be simple and straightforward. Too bad we humans complicate things. Bean has the best googly eyes – a real treat on Monday.

    June 4, 2018
    • That pun is first class. Which we don’t travel on account of the risk of poos on important people’s feet. Though in truth if we had the money it would be amusing 😉

      June 6, 2018
  16. Well Bean, I loved your traveldog! It was extremely well written and I can only applaud your talent. You have a great taste in music too. You obviously went to a very posh finishing school.
I really look forward to your next blog post!

    June 4, 2018
    • I am heartened by this praise. Thank you Peter. I will appear again quite soon. I have important missives to share 😉

      June 6, 2018
      • Good. You should submit them to the Wuffington Post!

        June 6, 2018
      • 😂

  17. doodletllc #

Cuter than cute and quite informative…so Mr. Bean, do you know if cats travel as easily as you do??? 🙂

    June 4, 2018
    • Salut Doodletllc …. how kind of you to be so kind. I do know cats can travel like I do in trains and planes. She has to book the tickets with the right airline and I have to weigh no more than 8kg with my bag (but you have to check because they change their rules sometimes). It costs about $200 per flight across the Atlantic for me. If you are too big to go in the cabin you have to go in the hold. Where does your Cat live? 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
      • Hi Mr. Bean…2 cats live in New Mexico and may one day travel/move to France…owner is working on it(!)

        June 6, 2018
      • Oh la la …. then I will assist all I can because really I am a French Bean at heart rather than a Boston Bean. My lady human did lots of research and the best airline for your pusscats to travel on is Air France who code share with Delta and KLM all of whom are pet friendly. Vive la France and let us know where you’d like to head to (flying across France by Hop! Or using the TGV is a cinch with animals …. I like both ways myself 🐾 🐾

        June 6, 2018
  18. Oh sweet Bean! Welcome to the US! Boston is the home of beans – make sure Mom gives you some boston baked beans (not to be confused with your sweetness!). You sure have been around! Way more places than me! My boy Charlie wants to say hi to you! He says you are brave to travel to so many places. He doesn’t like to leave home as he gets motion sickness. Take care sweet Bean – and enjoy your family being together in one happy place – you and and Mom and Dad! So happy for all of you!

    June 4, 2018
    • Salut Jodi! I am sorry Charlie gets sick in cars. She had a labrador when She was a little girl and he got sick too. He was called Chuck. I think that name is like Charlie, no? I have a basket on the back seat with a blanket and mostly I just lie under there. She says I am part mole because I always bury myself – I love my blankets. I do like travelling but only because it is with Them …. my mummy and daddy are my favourite people and it is SO nice to be together with them all the time. We are very happy. Thank you for being happy for us. I will make sure she learns how to make these baked beans. I understand they come with meats. This will suit me very well 😉 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
      • So Bean- yes Chuck and Charlie are like the same name. In fact I’ll let you in on a little secret. We often called Charlie Chuck, and he got his name because he threw up several times on the way home from the shelter where we rescued him. another phrase for throwing up is up-Chuck. Get it? 🤪

        June 6, 2018
      • Thank you Miss Jodi …. I have learned a new ‘Americaneze’ expression. Poor Charlie … up-Chucking is not at all fun. 🤮

        June 7, 2018
  19. They’ll never, ever forget to take you with them, Bean, but no more pooing on feet!

    June 5, 2018
    • OK Miss Peggy – I promise 🐶 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  20. I daren’t tell the Big T that Bean probably has more air miles than he does! I do hope you have actually enrolled him in a frequent flyer programme. I’m sure express check-in and lounge access are right up his alley. Especially the lounge — free food and all that. 🙂

    June 5, 2018
    • She shares my air miles and they are accumulating nicely …. all food is free in her world (well just the cost of a hard stare with the goo-goo eyes 😉)

      June 6, 2018
  21. “All food is dog food,” — wise words according to my Freckles. The Bean is adorable and very photogenic, as are you! In fact, I can see that photo gracing a children’s book perfectly. 🙂

    June 5, 2018
    • Well done Freckles …. the number one rule learned well 😉. The Bean is considering a career as le nouveau A A Milne as she reclines decorously in her bed. Or The Ahlbergs, perhaps (both of them) 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  22. This post was dog gone good. : )

    June 5, 2018
    • Hey Patty … you are too kind! The Bean doesn’t write often but she is quite a giggle when she does 😉 Thank you so much for reading her post and for taking the time to comment. I hope we will see more of you and meantime, I think I should take a little stroll over to your place 😊

      June 6, 2018
  23. Dear Bean – you rock! I know you have a very busy life but please do try to write more often. Happy trails.

    June 5, 2018
    • Thank you kind lady – I am less busy now because He is here to share the burden of guarding Her. So I think I might write some more quite soon. I might hijack one of Her French Fridays. After all, my perspective on the place is pretty important, non? 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  24. I do so love the Bean and her musings. She is very articulate for one so young as well…..
Like her, I too have been everywhere.
I’ve been to Hanney, Grove, Hendred, Sparsholt, Letcombe, Challow, Childrey, Ginge, Goosey and Charney Bassett. I even went to Witney once…..

    June 5, 2018
    • Goosey is one of my all time favourite place names! Well travelled man you are Cam! The Bean was a little home-bird before we moved to France but she has made up for it since. Glad you enjoyed the post. It gave me a rest 😉

      June 6, 2018
  25. Cher Bean, I sympathise with you. Though I have never been on a boat or plane, I am constantly being bungled into a plastic box for long overheated car journeys to the Uk and shorter even more overheated ones up and down france.
Sometimes I hide under the bed, or even squash myself like a mouse under the kitchen units, on these occasions they have to fill up the ‘cat mate’ (which is not my mate at all) with hard crunchy cat food (I prefer the juicy, meaty, fishy Felix – but that goes off in the heat) and they leave me alone for up to 48 hours, then I am sorry that I did not oblige by getting into the box.
I too have a Frenchie man in a white coat that even worse sticks a plastic straw into my derriere – this makes my eyes pop!
I look forward to hearing more of your adventures and my mummy likes to hear what your mummy is up to also
    Miaow for now
    Pussy Willow xx

    June 5, 2018
    • Salut Pussy Willow! I am very sorry you have had the plastic straw in the derrière. They did that to me once and I was extremely offended. My advices to you are to get in the box even though you don’t really want to because these Two Legs of ours are just too willful and won’t listen to our pleas and in the end it is just worse. I am of course, plotting a revolution – not like Animal Farm because those piggies were just silly but one where we get the Two Leggers to understand the real natural order which gives Dogs and Cats the upper paw. 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
      • Thnk you for your words of encouragement Bean, but I am afraid to tell you that the humans are plotting to deliver me to the straw wielding man in the white coat – this very Friday…..that’s if they get me in the box – viva la revolution – and thank you mummy for the insider info on Napoleon’s trousers xx

        June 6, 2018
      • Oh no! This is dreadful. Why do they treat us so unjustly? One of my mummies other readers called Kerry has a cat and he destroyed the Vets office in Egypt …. just a thought 😉 xx

        June 6, 2018
      • I was the very model of dignity Bean, my humans were impressed, if not astonished. As a result I got lots of cat treats and cuddles. Compliancy could be the way forward…….I shot in my box after the second injection.

The humans are planning to take me on another three hour car journey on Thursday….Looking forward to reading how you are faring across the pond

        Pussy Willow xx

        June 12, 2018
      • Chapeau Pussy Willow … you are a very wise cat! Bon courage for the car journey and remind them that the only way is treats 😉 I will be writing some more quite soon. So far I am very relaxed and content though I am picking up talkings about their ‘Anniversary’ and I think they may be planning to go away again. Without me again. I do like my Hôtel de Chien but really? Twice in a month is a little excessive. I must plot a plan ….. xx

        June 12, 2018
      • Bon Courage comrade. et Bon anniversaire to your humans x

        June 12, 2018
      • Merci mon amie félin … je suis toujours la vanqueuse 😉 xx

        June 12, 2018
  26. Just wonderful – dragged me in. Picking up an earlier comment, it has the makings of ANY book (why should children have all the fun?). I loved “being fortunate is not counted in gold coins or sunshine but in the warmth you feel in your heart” too. And I hope that, if they don’t already say, ‘tickety-boo’ in Boston, that it catches on very soon.

    June 5, 2018
    • Thank you Mike. With all this praise, she might actually put her posh paws forward and think about a bigger book – Heaven help us! I’m so glad you picked up on that line …. just glad. Tickety-boo will be my mission for Bostonians (after all this is New England and proper English should be spoken, do we think 😉)

      June 6, 2018
  27. Lovely – in all shapes and sizes – words and Bean.

    June 5, 2018
    • I try to live by the wisdom of The Bean where possible. I don’t always get it right but when I allow that simplicity in it feels so much more contenting!

      June 6, 2018
  28. Youre rather good at this dogblogging lark, aren’t you, Bean? Looking forward to the next instalment of your thoughts 😊 xx

    June 5, 2018
    • What a thoroughly wise man of good taste you are Mr Clive 😊 I will be sharing more of my thoughts when She lets me but meanwhile, rest easy that I am having extremely high thoughts even though I appear to be snoozing 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
      • Thank you, it’s good to be appreciated. I think best with my eyes closed too. Well, that’s what I used to tell people at work 😉 xx

        June 6, 2018
      • My mummy claims this skill too 😉

        June 6, 2018
  29. I love your Bean pondering, Fiona. 💗💫✨ Your faithful friend is such a sweetheart! You look radiant in the airport approaching the two brained hubby or daughter!! 💞 This was fun and very interesting! hugs xo

    June 5, 2018
    • That was our arrival in April. I had been through the special interview room where my fate was decided and I have never been so relieved in my life. The Bean went WILD when she got out of the bag and saw HB2. International travel with a dog is not relaxing but she does a stalwart job of trying to m

      June 6, 2018
      • I’m so glad you and Bean got out of the interview room to get to see H2, both of you overjoyed and relieved! 😀 Lots of happy dancing (I picture Snoopy with his feet nearly a blur of waving them in a dance) after final hurdle was jumped! She really saved you from being totally nervous, I’m sure she helped you in some way. . . 💞 🐕

        June 7, 2018
      • What a brilliant image …. it was exactly that Snoopy dance! The Bean being there was a blessing there is no doubt – gave me something else to think about. And all was well and all the fear just melted away as it does when we are given good news xoxo

        June 7, 2018
      • I’m glad she was there, a steady presence of your beloved, dedicated Bean. 💕 The Snoopy dance is one I visualized as you told the story!

        June 11, 2018
    • I have a new keyboard and its a bit to happy to upload comments before I’m ready! She is a good girl when we travel – the sound of the aircraft lulls her to sleep and this time she even refrained from squeaking on the descent which was a relief!! Xo

      June 6, 2018
  30. Oh, sweetie! I´m so glad you enjoy your stay at the good spiking man´s. 😉 And you´re such a good writer! I hope we get to see more of your ponderings in the near future. 😉 And you´re so right: all we need is love, Love, LOVE!!! xxxxxxx

    June 5, 2018
    • Salut Sarah! I am heartened by everyone’s kind comments so I will be writing more. I just got back from the spiking man and they were REALLY kind. It has changed there because we now have a special ‘small dog arena’ which means I get to run around whenever I want to rather than how it was before when they had to come and take me out for my leg stretches and constitutionals. She says that more people should listen to dog wisdom. I will be spreading more love love LOVE very soon and meanwhile please say hello to the squirrels in Berlin. The ones here love it when I chase them. Honestly they do 😉 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
      • As you can imagine the squirrels were very excited to hear from you today! 😉 And the world would be a much kinder and happier place when all people would listen to your wisdom! 😍🐶

        June 6, 2018
      • I’m working on getting my wisdom out there. The squirrels understand me perfectly 🐾 🐾

        June 6, 2018
  31. Oh lovely, lovely Bean; you’re absolutely the Cherry on the Cream on the Top of the Cake!!!! Heartwarming, funny and – between you and me – you’re quite a looker in those pics! Go on, make 2b and Osyth happy in the Overseas-Lands…. you all merit it!

    June 5, 2018
    • Salut Kiki! I think you might be my favourite – I’ll take all your praise. It’s what I do. And treats, of course 😉. So lovely to meet you (oops, nearly typed meat 🥩) A bientôt ma belle amie 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
      • As an unconditional doggie lover you ARE amongst MY faves too, lovely Bean! 🙂

        June 6, 2018
  32. Dear Bean, you are a well travelled lady. I sympathise about those injections… How wonderful that you could fly beside Fiona. I bet she was very glad of your company. Looking forward to reading of your next adventures. 🐶😍

    June 5, 2018
    • Dear Brigid, thank you for writing such a nice message. I don’t mind flying with Her. Mostly I like the airports in France because they let me walk around and people give me lots of attention and of course the cafés serve nice cheese and meats 😉 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  33. It’s a dog’s life, Bean. Great choice of song

    June 5, 2018
    • She thought so too M. Derrick 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  34. What a cutie he is. What a fun read. Thank you

    June 5, 2018
  35. Nice to meet you Bean, please return soon.

    June 5, 2018
    • I will Lady Sharon. I like telling my stories and people here are very kind to me 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  36. Beautiful Post. The Bean is well traveled and seems to adjust well to all environments. The pictures of the Bean are so cute and I am sure The Bean will enjoy the Boston area and I am sure that everyone who meets The Bean will fall in love with him.

    June 6, 2018
    • Thank you Gary. She is a well-travelled girl and astounds me with her ability to just fit and get on with wherever she is. She enjoys it here very much and the great thing is that, with the veterinarians having boarding for her we can leave her confidently and she doesn’t have to fly for the moment!!

      June 6, 2018
  37. Kevin Ryan #

An utter delight! Bean needs aTV show!

    June 6, 2018
    • Kevin! How lovely to see you here 😊 Don’t give The Bean ideas …. she’s too big for her paws as it is! 🐾 🐾

      June 6, 2018
  38. Wonderful Bean! Your as good at prose and typing as your mistress. It’s great travelling but not having dinner, that could mean a distraction needed. Hope you bought blankets and toys to throw about. Needles and those vet people. Scary but then I bet you get tonnes of hugs afterwards and treats, so probably worth it. You must write regularly and send us updates on your favourite bones, who you have chased and if you have any health tips on managing wet noses, wagging tails and rain jackets.
Good luck on your next journey. Bark, bark, bark!

    June 6, 2018
    • Salut Mademoiselle Judi! I did get a tiny bit of Her biscotti at Heathrow this time and we had such a short time between planes in Paris that we had to run through the airport. Before I realized what was going on I was zipped back in my bag and we were on the big bird to Boston. I like the big planes better than the little ones because they are not so noisy and I do just go to sleep. BUT I have to have my toy which is called ‘yellow dog’ with me. I have had him since I was very young. And my blanket. I wrap up in it and then I just zizz until we get to the other end. The worst bit is being carried in the bag because it is a bit wobbly. I have water in the bag on the plane and She stops and makes sure I drink before we go through the immigrating place. And then we go to the dog immigrating bit and I show them the passing port and they tell me I’m ‘real cute’ and then we get met by Him and I get a treat. I am going to write more things because I think it is extremely important to share my opinions and views 😉 🐾 🐾

The picture of you, and the hidden Bean is lovely. Welcome to the United States, and stay as long as you like – you will both make the US a better place.

    June 6, 2018
    • Thank you Arby …. she was not hidden for much longer – that picture was taken by my one true love and she went berserk when he greeted us. I have had such lovely welcomes here and however long I stay here I will do my darndest to work for the greater good of my fellows 🙂

      June 6, 2018
  40. Welcome. Delighted to have you join my daily one-word challenge. Hope to see you often.

    June 6, 2018
    • I’m delighted to join. I’m afraid I didn’t write the post specially this time but I will join often, I am sure and will make the posts sparkly and new in future 🙂 By the way, it is a really good thing that you are doing and I will get the word out over time. I find that better than simply sharing and forgetting 🙂 á bientôt

      June 6, 2018
      • Thanks. I appreciate that.

        June 6, 2018
      • 🙂

        June 6, 2018
  41. What a cutie!! The bean sure is a world traveler!

    June 6, 2018
    • She’s done a fair bit but I think she will be resting for a while now since the kennels is so good that we need not take her with us when we travel by air unless we really want to 🙂 xx

      June 6, 2018
  42. both you and Beanie-gal look beyond great!!! I’m sooo happy for you: 1st of all ’cause you’re with your beloved hubby, and 2nd of all – I love Boston, Mass!!! <3

    June 7, 2018
    • Thank you so much, Mélanie – the patience paid off and we are SO glad to be here. Boston MA would love to see you ♥️

      June 7, 2018
  43. I drove through Winnemucca once long ago, but I did not know the Man in Black had a song about it. Now I know. Thanks!

    June 7, 2018
    • Glad to help 😊

To Miss Bean: Vinny and I await you with such joy and passion…I hope your trip was bearable and without too much discomfort. To Mrs Osyth: How long I have awaited your arrival, how much I wish to share. Welcome to the country of my birth and I hope it is all it should be.

    June 8, 2018
    • I am so excited that I can finally get to meet you both and we can be proper friends that share snacks. You understand that I do NEED meats and cheese and all other foods except for fruit which is …. well, fruitless. John, I am so glad to be here. All is well and shall be weller when we get together 😊

      June 8, 2018
  45. So good to meet you, Bean! Loved your theme song. I’d forgotten how great is Johnny Cash.

    June 8, 2018
    • It’s nice to been you too Ms Jacquie. I don’t know how to work the music making machines so I listen to what They choose but I can dance – particularly when there is cheese on the table 🧀 🐾 🐾

      June 8, 2018
  46. I think Lady Bean and I would get on rather well, that, of course, includes the Squire. So do I now call you Lady Beans cohort, Fiona or is it still Osyth? 🙂 Go well Lady Bean and enjoy your continued travel in good health!

    June 8, 2018
    • Osyth is the name I prefer for blogging and is actually my middle name. When I started the blog I foolishly used my own email address for contact hence people getting wind of my first name. These days I wince less when I see it in print but overall I prefer Osyth here and Fiona outside. The Bean is very happy that you have dubbed her Lady Bean and she is sure that she will be very happy to be acquainted with you and the squire down the road a little while and share some happy house-sitting moments with you both 🙂

      June 8, 2018
      • Fair enough Osyth, and I acknowledge the need for privacy, which we do when we housesit as many are very well known. All have been happy with my dog tales which I leave no idea exactly where they live. Privacy is very important for all concerned.

        June 8, 2018
      • I never doubted that …. I would imagine in your business that a breach of privacy even if the client was not well known would result in curtains to any further bookings. 🙂

        June 8, 2018
      • Yep 👍on our 33rd housesit so must be doing something correctly!

        June 9, 2018
      • Wow! Impressed. And yes, definitely doing ALL things right, I’d say. Your guides are invaluable to anyone considering using a service as well as those who might like to think about it as a new career. Book?

        June 9, 2018
      • Might do one. Though will need to improve my writing skills before I get that ambitious. Never say never!

        June 9, 2018
      • Never is not a word in my vocabulary 🙂

        June 9, 2018
  47. Definitely book worthy. If Baba can be a best seller so can The Bean 🙂

    June 8, 2018
    • I’ll consider it if she allows me to be her literary agent and take my customary 10%!!

      June 8, 2018
  48. That was absolutely wonderful! If The Bean would ever like a holiday in London she would be welcomed with open arms, meat treats and a space on the sofa to watch an Agatha Christie with me. Katie x

    June 9, 2018
    • I have read her your note and she is delighted that you have enjoyed her opus and even more delighted to be invited for sofa, treats and her favourite author (all dogs are detectives, don’t ya know 😉 ) Her brothers from different mothers Brian and Barry live in SW London so I think you will find she eagerly accepts x

      June 9, 2018
      • I am extremely pleased! 🐶🐶🐶

        June 10, 2018
      • 🙂 xx

        June 10, 2018
  49. It is probably a bit undignified to have to be weighed prior to boarding a plane – after all, they don’t make us humans go through it, why should our four-legged friends be so required? I mean, isn’t it us humans who give you four-leggeds the extra treats which cause the weight gain that could be problematic?

    June 9, 2018
    • It’s actually bat-crazy the whole thing and of course based on revenue for the airlines. We have to pay $200 each flight for her (less internally in France) and she is stashed under the seat just like normal hand-baggage. But we dance the dance because we we need to. And yes, humans are entirely responsible for obesifying their animals. When did you ever see an obsese fox or coyote or any other wild animal? Mind you, those soulful eyes can be hard to resist. But I am made of girders 😉

      June 10, 2018
      • I do wish Choppy was small enough to take on a plane with me. If she was, I would happily pay for her to travel with us pretty much everywhere we go.

        June 11, 2018
      • I never thought I would have a tiny dog …. I have always had much bigger dogs but it seems that it was kismet given our past few years. I wish it were so simple for those of you with bigger fur babies 🙂

        June 11, 2018
  50. Hey Bean, it’s very nice to meet you, I hope we’ll hear more of your adventures in America and wherever your humans will take you 😉 See you ! 😉

    June 10, 2018
    • Merci M.Roijoyeux Enchanter de fait votre connaissance! Ouaf 🙂
